what is inquiry?

inquiry is a recursive cycle–with each of its elements interacting at every point when the inquirer encounters new information.

  • questioning. who / what / where /when / how / why
  • exploration. finding answers to questions by reading, viewing, listening
    • the irony of inquiry is that it is ultimately limiting as time progresses.  As the cycle repeats itself, exploration becomes more focused and discriminating
  • assimilation. accumulation of knowledge, the alteration of accepted knowledge, and the constant consideration of alternatives
  • inference. -> evidence
    • evidence supports claims, justifies norms, and is always necessary to justify change
  • reflection. “Have I answered my questions?”
    • The learner who masters reflection becomes the truly independent learners
